(Video) World's Fastest Car 1690 kmph Bloodhound SSC

British engineers have revealed plans to build the world's first 1,000mph car, the Bloodhound SSC, which is named after British supersonic air defence missiles. This car is expected to break the current world land speed record of 763 mph (1228 kmph).

The project is being handled by RAF wing commander Andy Green (who set the current land speed record of 763mph with Thrust SSC in 1997) and Richard Noble who conceived it.

The car will reach a speed of 1,050mph (1690 kmph) and outrun a bullet from a .357 Magnum revolver (which means you could effectively travel from Delhi to Mumbai in 45 minutes!!).

The Bloodhound SSC will use a combination of jet, rocket and piston-engined power to produce 20,000kg (45,000lb) of thrust in order to propel the 42ft long, 14,110lb car. The car will do 0 to 1,050 mph in just 40 seconds.

Andy Green will initially attempt 800mph next year, then 900mph in 2010 and finally 1,000mph in 2011. The venue has not been decided as yet, but possible locations include South Africa and Australia. Green's earlier record was set in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada.

(Video) Blind man sets speed record at 308.78 km/h in Lamborghini

Luc Costermans, a blind Belgian man, has set a new world blind speed record by driving a borrowed Lamborghini Gallardo at 192 mph (308.78 km/h). Luc set the world record at Istres airstrip, near Marseille, in southern France, with his co-pilot, Guillaume Roman. He was accompanied by his instructor and a navigator.

The earlier record was held by Mike Newman of Britain, who had raced a BMW M5 to a speed of 268km/h three years ago.

"I'm very, very happy. It's a team effort," Luc said after the run.

Luc, 43, who was blinded in an accident four years ago, hit the top speed twice in the Lamborghini.

Luc has dedicated his effort to the Formula 1 racing driver Philippe Streiff, who has been completely paralysed after an accident in the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1989.

Rs. 1 lakh Oreva electric car launched before Tata Nano

Even before the Rs. 1 lakh Tata Nano car could roll out from Gujarat, Oreva has launched its Rs. 1 lakh Oreva Super electric car. Oreva is manufactured by the Ajanta Group, a Saurashtra-based company, which is a well known clockmaker in India.

Rs. 1 lakh Oreva electric car

The production of the car will be done at its plant in Kutch and the first model of the car is already on display at the Rajkot dealer's showroom. Although the company officials did not speak to the media, the Rajkot dealer said, "This is the first model out on display. I can't share any more details about it as we have been asked to be tight-lipped for sometime. It is just a fabulous car and very economic in these days of rocketing fuel prices."

"Obviously, it's pricing is so strategic that it will compete with Tata's Nano," he added.

Already the Oreva has generated curiosity among the people although the deliveries are expected only after two months.

Ajanta also makes electric scooters and bikes under the ‘Oreva’ brand name. According to the company, production of an electric car is not difficult for them since the technology is almost similar and 70 % of its parts can be produced in-house, which would give them an edge over the pricing of the car.

The company claims that the Oreva electric car can run 200-250 km on one full battery charge. The car will have the capacity to seat four people. The non-AC version is expected to be priced at Rs 85,000 and the AC variant of the car will be priced at Rs. 1 lakh.

Reva, manufactured by the Bangalore group Maini, is the only electric car in India at present, but is priced at Rs. 4.5 lakhs. So the launch of the Rs. 1 lakh Oreva Super will provide an affordable alternative to millions of middle class Indian customers.
